WILLESDEN COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

The praiseworthy idea to establish Willesden College International in this country germinated in the mind of its founder; chairman the late Mr. Douglas Jayasiri Silva.  He realized the goal endorsed by the international community of making education accessible to all where ever they are, regardless of socio-economic circumstance, race, creed or gender.  Hence instead of investing his money in a project that could have brought him considerable instant profit he unstintingly invested his well earned money in pursuit of a goal that would definitely bring about a viable future for the new generation.  Thus the College was born fifteen years ago on the 17^th of October 1991.

His mission was to provide a suitable foundation towards a wide range of quality multi- disciplinary education and training opportunities at affordable fees.  It covered a range of curricular areas in general education towards a stable foundation for higher academic, professional, technical and vocational careers. He was instrumental in inculcating the norms and values respected by society.

To meet the assessment objectives of the examinations and achieve effective differentiation across a pleasing range of achievements the school has a team of qualified and experienced Staff guided by the efficient Chairperson an able Directress, an accomplished Principal and Administrative staff, who have wide exposure to foreign education systems. Their advice and guidance, has made a key contribution to developing the spiritual, moral social and cultural education of students.  This specification has been developed following extensive consultation, meetings with teachers and lecturers in the various subjects.  High competency levels and career development, appropriate class sizes and resources for effective learning, which are essential conditions for the educational quality that is universally sought is well established here. Administrative matters are carried out with exemplary correctness, a very good and successful set of submissions, for which all those involved must be thanked for and congratulated.

The academic achievements of the students are greatly high lighted by the many instances where they have emerged victorious not only competing with outstanding schools of the island, but with other competitions held by the UNDP, and GIS to name some.  

On the Aesthetic field students have won in the All Island competitions Gold and Silver trophies and medals from 2004 to 2007 in succession by participating at the Annual Sri Lanka Festival of Dance Music and Speech in both the Dancing category and Western music singing category.

Willesden College International has excelled in sports activities too.  At the Indoor Cricket Tournament   2005/2006 the college team won the award for the best performance.  Two students were selected to the National Pool.  The swimmers of the college had their turn at the swimming meet held at the Austasia sports complex. 

Since its inception the college has reached its present status with its academic performances, leadership qualities, co- curricular activities and case of adjustment to University Education. Once you have completed your Advanced Level examination you could progress on to one of the Universities in the U. K. which has linked up with Willesden College for further higher education.  At present students have gained admission to foreign universities after successfully completing their Advanced Level examination. In addition students accepted by a foreign university after successful completion may be eligible for a scholarship for each year of study.  The college has gained accreditation as an Examination centre, not only for the University of Oxford (delegacy of Local examinations) but also those of Cambridge for their own G. G. E. (Ordinary Level) and (Advanced Level) examinations.

At present we conduct week end courses aimed at additional English Language skills and on course assignments.  All teaching will aim to promote the assimilation of new techniques.

The high ideal with which the founder was imbued has come to stay with Willesden College when the students stand for:-

His vision accomplished, the progress well documented, now the college stands in all its glory as a living tribute to the memory of its founder the late Mr. Douglas Jayasiri Silva.

A variety entertainment was held at the Bishop’s College Auditorium on the 17^th of October 2006 to mark the 15^th anniversary.
